Neuromuscular Orthodontic Services in Miami

Tetri’s Smile Clinic offers neuromuscular orthodontic services. These services involve correcting bites using braces or aligners based on the principles of neuromuscular diagnostics.

Neuromuscular diagnostics address the underlying causes of malocclusion, restoring proper jaw and facial muscle function. We determine the ideal jaw position and alleviate the consequences of TMD (Temporomandibular Joint Disorder), including headaches, earaches, jaw clicking, muscle stiffness, neck pain, and incorrect posture.

Dr. Tetri

“Most patients come to me in hopes of achieving the perfect “Hollywood smile”. Due to neuromuscular issues such as malocclusion and TMD (Temporomandibular Joint Disorder), it is not possible to immediately place veneers or crowns. Prior treatment following the principles of neuromuscular orthodontics is required.

I collaborate with Dr. Koval, an experienced orthodontist. Together, we develop a personalized treatment plan and achieve successful results.”

What is Neuromuscular Orthodontics?

Traditional orthodontics aims to align crowded or abnormally positioned teeth. However, having straight teeth does not necessarily mean you have the correct bite.

Neuromuscular orthodontics involves a comprehensive approach to correcting malocclusion. It involves aligning teeth, correcting facial muscle function, addressing TMD (Temporomandibular Joint Disorder), and treating sleep apnea. Factors such as tongue size, the width/shape of each tooth, and the presence of harmful habits are taken into account.

Addressing the underlying causes of malocclusion requires collaborative work between a neuromuscular dentist and an orthodontist.

Examples of Neuromuscular Orthodontics

Patient 22

Case 22

The patient was unhappy with the aesthetics of her smile and wanted the perfect “Hollywood smile”. She sought the expertise of Dr. Tetri to have veneers placed.

Diagnostic procedures were conducted following the principles of neuromuscular dentistry. They revealed significant bite issues, and orthodontic treatment was necessary prior to veneer placement.

Dr. Koval performed orthodontic treatment using Invisalign aligners. Alongside piezoelectric surgery, the whole course of treatment lasted 8 months.

Subsequently, Dr. Tetri ensured proper jaw alignment and normal functioning of the facial muscles. Ceramic veneers were then placed on the front upper and lower teeth, while ceramic crowns were placed on the molar teeth.

Patient 23

Case 23

The patient visited the clinic in hopes to undergo orthodontic treatment using Invisalign aligners.

During the consultation, the patient complained to Dr. Tetri about persistent headaches and facial muscle pain.

Dr. Tetri conducted a thorough examination following the standards of neuromuscular dentistry. The diagnostics revealed an open bite due to abnormal positioning of the lower teeth.

In collaboration with Dr. Koval, Dr. Tetri developed a personalized treatment plan. Using 3D jaw models, they demonstrated how the teeth would be aligned.

After 12 months of wearing the aligners, the patient’s bite was corrected. The patient was relieved of headaches and facial muscle pain during chewing.

Case 28

The patient complained of headaches and pain while chewing. She also had aesthetic concerns, such as a completely collapsed anterior facial segment due to a reverse bite.

The treatment was performed by Dr. Tetri in collaboration with Dr. Koval. The patient underwent neuromuscular diagnostics, orthodontic treatment, and veneer placement.

After a 7-month waiting period, remarkable results were achieved. The profile of the face underwent a significant transformation, with proper proportions restored and appearing younger. The smile appeared natural and attractive.

Why choose Neuromuscular Orthodontics?

Chronic headaches and discomfort while chewing are quite common symptoms. However, it is unlikely that a patient will suspect a bite problem and improper functioning of facial muscles. Only by opting for tooth restoration with crowns or veneer placement, can a patient achieve a beautiful smile. However, this approach will not address the underlying bite issues.

Due to incorrect facial muscle function, the jaws may continue to close/open improperly. The facial muscles will remain constantly strained, exacerbating headaches and causing other problems.

Reasons to seek treatment from a TMJ dentist:

Persistent headaches

Jaw clicking during chewing and opening of the mouth

Facial muscle stiffness/spasms

Ear noise or congestion

Sleep disturbances

Teeth grinding

These issues can be resolved with the harmonious function of dental arches, facial muscles, and temporomandibular joints.

1
Diagnostics

We conduct comprehensive examinations. Using CMS, we scan the trajectory of lower jaw movement in three planes. EMG allows us to measure the activity of facial muscles at rest and during function. ESG helps us examine the presence of clicks or noises during temporomandibular joint movement.

Based on the gathered data, we evaluate how the teeth interact with facial muscles and the temporomandibular system. We identify deviations from the norm and, if necessary, address any detected temporomandibular disorders or hypertonicity of facial muscles.

2
Normalization of facial muscle function

We relax facial muscles using TENS, a technique involving super-low-frequency electromyostimulation. We alleviate muscle spasms and train the muscles to function correctly.

3
Determining the ideal jaw position

Once the facial and masticatory muscles are relaxed, and the temporomandibular system functions are restored, we use a specialized computer program to determine the ideal bite. Then, we develop a personalized treatment plan for aligning the teeth using aligners or braces.

4
Orthodontic treatment

We perform teeth cleaning to remove plaque and tartar buildup. Digital impressions are taken using an intraoral scanner. Braces or aligners are then placed.

5
Installation of veneers and crowns

When the teeth are aligned, and the jaws come together correctly, we fix veneers or crowns depending on the clinical situation.
